Talking Dementia in our Retirement Living Community
Today at our Kokoda Residences, Waitara our Vasey Communities village manager organised for a group of residents to attend a Dementia Australia webinar together.
The subject was “It’s time to talk about Dementia”, the theme of this years Dementia Action Week which runs from 21 to 27 September nationally.
The purpose of the webinar was to help build greater community understanding, reduce stigma and discrimination, bust the myth that memory loss is just a normal part of ageing and connect people to local support and services.
Why is this important, 2 reasons;
Firstly, Dementia is Australia's leading cause of death, affecting nearly half a million people and involving over 1.7 million carers.
And secondly, silence isn’t neutral, it has a cost, which is one of Dementia Australia’s key messages in developing this year’s theme.
Every Wednesday at Kokoda Residences, our team also host ‘DCaf’ – Dementia Café – where residents at the village and people from the wider community come together in a welcoming and supportive environment to prevent that silence!
